Questions & Step-by-Step Solutions
How do the kidneys respond to low blood pressure?
Steps
Concepts
Step 1: The body detects low blood pressure through sensors in the blood vessels.
Step 2: The kidneys respond by releasing a hormone called renin into the bloodstream.
Step 3: Renin activates a process called the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS).
Step 4: This process leads to the production of angiotensin II, which causes blood vessels to narrow (constrict).
Step 5: Angiotensin II also stimulates the adrenal glands to release another hormone called aldosterone.
Step 6: Aldosterone helps the kidneys retain more sodium and water, which increases blood volume.
Step 7: As blood volume increases, blood pressure rises back to normal levels.
Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System (RAAS)
– The physiological mechanism by which the kidneys regulate blood pressure through the release of renin.
Kidney Function in Blood Pressure Regulation
– The role of the kidneys in maintaining homeostasis and responding to changes in blood pressure.
