Questions & Step-by-Step Solutions
What is the main advantage of using high voltage for transmission?
Steps
Concepts
Step 1: Understand that power is the product of voltage and current. The formula is Power (P) = Voltage (V) x Current (I).
Step 2: When we want to transmit a certain amount of power over long distances, we can either increase the voltage or the current.
Step 3: If we increase the voltage, the current will decrease for the same power level. This is because of the formula mentioned in Step 1.
Step 4: Lower current means less energy is lost as heat due to resistance in the wires. This is called resistive power loss.
Step 5: Therefore, using high voltage for transmission is advantageous because it reduces the amount of energy lost during transmission.
