Questions & Step-by-Step Solutions
In a series RLC circuit, what happens at resonance? (2020)
Steps
Concepts
Step 1: Understand what a series RLC circuit is. It consists of a resistor (R), inductor (L), and capacitor (C) connected in a single loop.
Step 2: Know what resonance means. Resonance occurs when the frequency of the applied voltage matches the natural frequency of the circuit.
Step 3: At resonance, the inductive reactance (XL) and capacitive reactance (XC) cancel each other out. This means XL = XC.
Step 4: When XL and XC cancel, the total impedance (Z) of the circuit is at its minimum value, which is equal to the resistance (R).
Step 5: With minimum impedance, the circuit allows maximum current to flow, and it behaves like a purely resistive circuit.
